Those who want to have a taste of historical relics; Kyrenia offers a wide range of castles and monasteries. One of them, overlooking the entrance to the harbour is a historical castle of Kyrenia.Originally built by the Byzantines in the 7th century, the castle was totally transformed by the Venetians in the 16th century to withstand the new war technology of heavy artillery. The castle today hosts a series of museums; one of which is harbouring the world-famous Kyrenia shipwreckdating back to the times of Alexander the Great which was discovered in 1965 by the Greek-Cypriot sponge diver Andreas Karoulos in 1965.
