This tour will give you a chance to explore the daily life of the ancient people at the home town of Saint Barnabas, Salamis. The Roman city of Salamis, with its mythology, Roman theatre, bath and latrines as well as its 2000 years old mosaics is a paradise for historical & archaeology fans. You can only imagine what still lies hidden under the sand dunes. Visiting St.Barnabas Monastery will give you the chance to learn about the Greek Orthodox Church and early Christian history of the island. We will visit the icon and archaeology museum with its rich findings as well as the tomb of Saint Barnabas. You will enjoy your lunch at a seafront restaurant with local mezes and kebabs. After lunch we will drive through the modern part of Famagusta to visit the wonderfully preserved walled old city. The 3, 5 km long city walls, dating back to Venetian times, harbour besides many church ruins, the Othello castle and the Gothic style St. Nicholas Cathedral (nowadays Lala Mustafa Pasha Mosque). While admiring the architectural style of the once Cathedral turned into Mosque we will learn a little more about Islam itself.

After you enjoy one-hour break in the walled city, we will view the area of “Varosha”, known as “ghost town”. Varosha, the ghost town, the name is coming from word “varoş” which means ghetto suburb, it’s a famous city with golden sandy beaches, it became popular place first, after the British built a club called “King George” then foreigners built summer houses but eh real fame came after 1960’s when the luxury hotels built between 1960-1974. Varosha became one of the most famous holiday destination in the world. Famous movie stars like Elizabeth TAYLOR, Brigitte BARDOT, Paul NEWMAN used to go there for their holidays.1974 when the island divided,Varosha closed and promised to given back real owners after the solution of Greek and Turkish Cypriots.
